ACI data centers are situated in the heart of downtown Toronto. One of our data centers is located at 151 Front Street – the telecommunications hub of Canada. Our other data center, which currently has available space is located at 35 John Street and provides redundant connections to 151 Front Street.

For customers who may find themselves outside of the urban core, consider how housing your hardware and/or data further away from your location (i.e. in an urban area), may protect it from any regional outages and make municipal services more available to address any cause for alarm.

ups bRedundancy is a best practice when you are looking at how a data center is powered. In order to maximize uptime and mitigate failures, look into “N + 1” power – this means that each component has an available and independent back up. While data centers that maintain redundancy in machinery can be common, True A + B power (where two separate lines/power environments are delivered to each cabinet) is much rarer.

Even more rare is the ability to measure and pay for consumption-based usage. Redundant power especially can become expensive to install and supply. Consider how able your data center is to monitor and bill you for exactly what you use.

ACI is able to offer True A + B power and redundant connections to a second data center that features redundant power as well. We even go so far as to deliver two independent, scalable power supplies to each cabinet with the ability to monitor and charge for exact usage each month.

fibre artsyEnsuring that your colocation provider has redundant connections with multiple carriers should be a high priority. A term that you will come across in your data center search is “carrier-neutral”, meaning the data center allows interconnection between multiple telecommunication carriers rather than residing on the network of a single provider. ACI is carrier neutral and can offer tenants direct connections to all major carriers while maintaining data and equipment on a separate network.

You may also want to consider the amount of fiber available for dedicated customer use. This will provide you an opportunity to scale and peer without having to factor in the build out cost of adding fiber connections down the road. At ACI we are able to offer more fiber to 151 Front St. than any other single tenant at 35 John St. This provides you with access to the notorious carrier-hotel where space is no longer available, and the redundant connectivity all Data Centers and tenants should insist upon.
